I am putting up my Christmas tree while planning my Thanksgiving menu with a skeleton in my front yard

Daily writing prompt
How do you celebrate holidays?

I LOVE LOVE the holidays. I go all in. I start Christmas shopping October 1st, decorate the porch for fall, pumpkins and hay bales everywhere. I absolutely do not stray from the traditional Thanksgiving meal of turkey with all the trimmings. My family would boycott and picket in front of the house. Christmas music is blaring early on my XM car stereo. Add in the annual Christmas Eve service and driving around looking at Christmas lights and holidays are complete!

The great purple beet explosion of 1984

Daily writing prompt
Write about your most epic baking or cooking fail.

When I was 16, my mom and grandma were teaching me how to can. We were working on canning jars of purple beets in a pressure canner.

The next round of jars were in, the canner sealed. However, one of the jars did not hold. It exploded and caused the lid to blow off the canner. Purple beets went everywhere, including on the ceiling.

It took days to clean that mess!!!!

Chapter 14 “The Deepening Scandal” (from “The Councilman’s Gambit”)

Within days, the story exploded. The Seattle Times, fueled by Tracy’s reporting and additional tips from Marcus’s anonymous sources, published a follow-up piece. This time, the implications were far more serious. The article detailed a complex web. It included shell corporations, offshore accounts, and dubious financial transactions. These linked Pacific Infrastructure Solutions to several high-ranking city officials. The article didn’t use the word “bribery,” but the circumstantial evidence was damning. Photographs of lavish parties and expensive gifts, purportedly paid for by Pacific Infrastructure Solutions, were splashed across the front page. The photos included some blurry images. They did not clearly identify anyone. However, they certainly hinted at the involvement of prominent figures in Seattle’s political landscape.

The internet, predictably, went ablaze. Social media platforms were flooded with outraged comments, hashtags like SeattleCorruption and DrainTheSound trending at record speeds. News channels ran non-stop coverage, analysts dissecting the latest revelations, experts weighing in on the legal implications. The story had gone viral, not just within Seattle, but across the nation. Even national news outlets picked up the story. They were eager to capitalize on the scandal unfolding in one of America’s most progressive cities.

The mayor’s office was initially dismissive. It issued a series of carefully worded press releases. These stated that the city was conducting a thorough investigation. The city would take appropriate action. These statements, however, failed to quell the rising tide of public anger. The mayor, a seasoned politician known for his polished public persona, appeared increasingly flustered and defensive in his televised interviews. His carefully crafted responses felt hollow and unconvincing, failing to reassure the increasingly skeptical citizenry.

The city council chambers became a pressure cooker. Patrick, despite being carefully shielded by Marcus’s strategic leaks, found himself under intense scrutiny. He used the opportunity to leverage the public outcry. He publicly called for a full and transparent investigation, demanding that all contracts with Pacific Infrastructure Solutions be immediately suspended. He proposed the creation of an independent oversight committee to review all city contracts, ensuring transparency and accountability. He framed his calls as a response to the public’s demand for change. They were not a self-serving attempt to capitalize on the scandal.

The Syndicate, caught off guard by the speed and ferocity of the public backlash, retaliated with a flurry of smear campaigns. Anonymous sources, clearly linked to the organization, leaked fabricated stories to the media, attempting to discredit the initial reports and paint Patrick as a self-serving politician exploiting the situation for personal gain. They attempted to portray him as being involved in the scandal, even insinuating he was profiting from the deals with Pacific Infrastructure Solutions. They targeted his family, spreading rumors about his personal life, hoping to destabilize him and diminish his credibility. Patrick received death threats, both online and in the form of anonymous letters and phone calls.

But the tide had turned. The public, initially confused and uncertain, had become increasingly angered by the clear evidence of corruption. The smear campaigns backfired, fueling even greater public outrage. People saw through the Syndicate’s attempts. They recognized the desperate efforts of a cornered organization to protect itself. The media, initially hesitant, now found themselves emboldened by the public’s demand for truth. More and more journalists were digging deeper into the scandal. They unearthed fresh evidence of corruption. This corruption extended beyond Pacific Infrastructure Solutions and City Hall.

The federal authorities finally got involved. The FBI, along with the local police department, launched a full-scale investigation. Raids were conducted at the offices of Pacific Infrastructure Solutions and the homes of several city officials. Arrests were made, high-profile politicians being taken into custody, their faces plastered all over the news. The story was now a national scandal, attracting the attention of politicians and investigators from across the country.

Patrick, meanwhile, remained a figure of both scrutiny and admiration. He walked carefully to appear cooperative with the investigations. He maintained his distance from the direct accusations against him. He allowed himself to be interviewed by major news outlets, speaking passionately about the need for reform and accountability. He used his platform to highlight the importance of civic engagement. He urged citizens to participate in their local government. He encouraged them to hold their elected officials accountable.

The public outrage was palpable. Protests erupted throughout the city, thousands of citizens taking to the streets to demand justice and an end to corruption. The protests were largely peaceful, but the underlying tension was evident. The mood in Seattle was volatile. There was anger at the betrayal of public trust. People feared the consequences. Yet, there was hope for a better, more transparent future. Patrick, watching from a distance, felt a surge of both relief and trepidation. The fight was far from over, but the city, at long last, was awake. The truth, however slowly, was starting to prevail. The exposure of The Syndicate was not merely a political victory. It marked the start of a long process of healing. Reform would be difficult. The battle was won, but the war was only just beginning. The long road to rebuild trust lay ahead. Restoring faith in the city government would be a task requiring unwavering determination. It also required the ongoing commitment of countless individuals. The future was uncertain, but one thing was certain: Seattle was forever changed.

The city’s awakening was a double-edged sword for Patrick. The jubilant outpouring of public support felt intoxicating, yet it also painted a massive target on his back. The Syndicate, its carefully constructed web of influence unraveling, reacted with a ferocity that chilled him to the bone. The smear campaigns intensified. They morphed from subtle innuendo into blatant accusations. Their lies were designed to unravel his reputation. This unraveling happened thread by painstaking thread. Anonymous blogs sprung up overnight. They were filled with fabricated stories about his alleged involvement in shady deals. These stories claimed his supposed connections to the very organization he was fighting against. Photos, crudely manipulated to implicate him in compromising situations, circulated across social media, spreading like wildfire.

His phone was constantly bombarded with threats. Menacing voicemails and chilling text messages arrived frequently. Each one served as a stark reminder of his precarious position. One particularly terrifying message included a picture of his young daughter’s school, a chilling implication that the Syndicate had eyes and ears everywhere. Fear gnawed at him, a constant companion that shadowed his every step. He knew, with a sickening certainty, that they wouldn’t stop until he was silenced, or worse.

The first physical threat came unexpectedly, a late-night encounter in the dimly lit alley behind his apartment building. Two figures emerged from the shadows, their faces obscured by hoodies, their movements quick and silent. Before he could react, one lunged, a hard, metallic object striking his ribs. The pain was sharp, excruciating, but he managed to fend them off, scrambling away into the relative safety of the street. The encounter left him bruised and shaken, but it was a wake-up call. He was no longer just a politician; he was a target.

My thoughts on being a leader

Daily writing prompt
Do you see yourself as a leader?

To be honest we are all leaders in one way or another. But some days I really wish I didn’t and could just blend into the shadows. The burden gets heavy at times. Maintaining a calm demeanor, being the voice of reason, having constant wisdom, discretion, always the mediator. But the world needs more of us, not less.

HOPE
